Activision confirms post-launch content strategy

Activision's Call of Duty Modern Warfare tank

We just wrote about how Activision and Infinity Ward were claiming that they’re not working on loot boxes, and that fact has been proven true. Call of Duty publisher Activision just tweeted a link to their blog stating as much. Let’s take a deep dive into what’s actually in store for gamers.

Activision says ‘no’ to loot boxes, ‘yes’ to Battle Pass

So first let’s talk about the good news.

  • Crossplay with PC, Xbox, Playstation for the first time ever
  • No ‘Season Pass’, no map packs that fragment the player base
  • Free post-launch maps and modes for all players
  • All post-launch maps and modes—that point is very important because a launch mode called ‘Survival’ is coming to the PS4

Now, there are no loot boxes, crates, or supply drops, so what will we have? The ever-so-popular-because-of-Fortnite, the Battle Pass.

The Battle Pass will give players seasonally-themed gear and is only available to those who purchase the season pass. As I’m understanding, this will be mainly cosmetic items. Per Activison’s blog, “All functional content that has an impact on game balance, such as base weapons and attachments, can be unlocked simply by playing the game. The new Battle Pass system will allow players to see the content that they are earning or buying. Battle Passes will launch timed to new, post-launch live seasons, so you can unlock cool new Modern Warfare-themed content that matches each season. With the new Battle Pass system, players will be able to earn COD Points by playing the game.”

Battle Pass—it’s not that bad, right?

So that’s honestly a huge relief for me, and I’m sure it’s a relief to players everywhere. Although I’m not too crazy about these silly in-game currencies, I’m happy to learn that it’s all purely based on cosmetics.

They go on to say, “The Battle Pass and the In-Game Store will feature a variety of cosmetic content that does not impact game balance. The Battle Pass System for Modern Warfare will not launch when the game releases on October 25th. Here’s why: First and foremost, we are all focused on making the Day One experience awesome. Second, it’s important to us that everyone who is playing Modern Warfare has the chance to work their way through the new game and unlock all the rewards that are waiting for you. We expect to launch this system for Modern Warfare later this year.”

I’m sceptical—as are many other gamers, I’m sure—when it comes to their post-launch promises. No jet packs in Black Ops 4 turned into eventually getting jetpacks in Black Ops 4. We’ll just have to take them at their word, for now at least.
