Call of Duty developer Infinity Ward took to reddit on October 13, 2019 to try and shed some light on recent rumors. The supposed rumors suggest that Activision and Infinity Ward are currently prepping loot boxes for in-game content. Reddit user u/artpeasant of Infinity Ward stated:

Modern Warfare Supply Drops

Sigh. There continues to be misinformed and incorrect info being pushed about Modern Warfare. What I can say right now is that we are definitely NOT working on any kind of supply drop or loot box system. Also, functional stuff is unlocked through GAMEPLAY. Stay tuned, we’re planning to release info this week.

As a Call of Duty fan, I’d like to take this message to heart. However, another reddit user, /uZer0X02, posted a screenshot possibly showing evidence to the contrary.

Activision is having quite the predicament with PR lately. From team leaks to the Blizzard/Hearthstone debacle, I think that they need to hire an entirely new PR team.

A history of backtracking

Here’s something else I saw. Reddit user u/Hammer-The-Lard posted a thread showing a year-old conversation where u/GrandPaladin22 posted a support dialog. In this dialog, u/GrandPaladin22’s friend chatted with Activision support and asked about supply drops in Black Ops 4.

While the Activision support agent said they weren’t coming, we all know that’s most definitely not the case.

So what does this mean for Modern Warfare? Honestly, I don’t know. I played the beta, the game is incredibly fun. There were a few beta-related hiccups, but it was one of the best feeling Call of Duty games I’ve ever played. It’s a bit slower, a bit more tactical, and the game’s graphics are incredible accurate down to movement details.

Loot box implementation is unclear

Hopefully they don’t backtrack on this again. I think that we’ve all seen how shitty loot drops can be. Cosmetics are one thing, but I’ve always felt like that’s only acceptable in free-to-play games.

Nevertheless, we’re only 10 days away from playing Call of Duty Modern Warfare, so I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
